Essai Philip Island 30-31/01 - 01/02 -
29/01/2007, 18h49
'Island test starts tomorrow - without Rossi.
The second MotoGP test of 2007 will start at Australia's Phillip Island circuit on Tuesday when Honda, Suzuki and Ducati teams will be back in action - but without rivals Yamaha and Kawasaki.
Both Japanese factories have chosen to concentrate on off-track development following the recent Sepang test and, despite Phillip Island's renowned importance for motorcycle set-up, will miss the Australian outing and return in time for the third and final Sepang test from February 5-7.
Factory Yamaha rider and former five-times world champion Valentino Rossi was fastest of all at Sepang, but much of the Phillip Island attention will now fall on the Rizla Suzuki team after John Hopkins confidently set the pace on the first two days in Malaysia and finished a close second overall to the Italian superstar.
However, Sepang has traditionally been a favourable circuit for Suzuki and its Bridgestone tyres prompting many, both inside and outside of Paul Denning's team, to regard the Phillip Island test as providing a more accurate indication of the team's current potential heading into the new 800cc era.
Over at world champion's Honda, attention will be focussed on extracting more performance from the new RC212V - particularly in terms of engine output and top speed - while Ducati will be aiming to continue the strong conclusion of its Sepang test, when Loris Capirossi was third fastest. It will also be interesting to see how new signing Casey Stoner performs on home ground and how close the satellite Pramac d'Antin Team can get to the factory riders.
The Phillip Island test lasts from Tuesday to Thursday.
