ANT'S GO KARTING CATASTROPHE

Published: 10 Jul 2008
After failing to qualify for the final of last year's Sachsenring go-kart race, Anthony West had been in intensive training at his local track in Eupen, Belgium ahead of this year's event. Unfortunately the practice was to prove worthless, as the 26-year-old Australian crashed while leading and gifted the race win to 250cc rider, Lukas Pesek.

West had qualified second on the grid for the race, behind Pesek who took pole, but it was the Australian who gained the early advantage to take the lead, which he extended with every lap.

And then, with just minutes of the race left to run, Ant decided to slow down and allow Alex De Angelis to catch him, intending to give the San Marino resident a lesson in driving before powering away again to take the race win.

"I was getting bored at the front of the race, so I decided to slow down and let Alex catch up," explains West. "Of course, the plan then was to let him think he could win before clearing off again and taking the chequered flag. He'd have been completely demoralised!"

That was the plan anyway, but unfortunately for West his execution was a little lacking. So focussed was he on showing De Angelis just how fast he was in a go-kart, the Kawasaki pilot didn't notice the fast approaching Pesek.

The Czech rider didn't hang about once he'd caught the two MotoGP stars and, rather than join in their two-way battle, he simply stuffed his kart up the inside of both of them and then out sprinted them to take the race win.

"It was all Alex's fault," claimed Ant on his return to Parc Ferme. "It was all going according to plan until he tried to overtake me, misjudged it completely and t-boned me. While we were sorting ourselves out Lukas passed both of us to take the win."

"I don't know how I'm going to explain this to the rest of the team, because they really were expecting me to win it by a mile," concluded a worried looking Ant.
